While there is limited research on the ecosystem services of treeless urban green space relative to urban trees, grass can provide a range of environmental, social, and aesthetic benefits in urban environments26,27. Compared with tree or concrete-only environments, urban environments with grass show a significantly stronger effect on supporting physiological and psychological well-being28. Although ‘greener’ cities have been widely observed from space13,15,16,29, the greenness-based vegetation indices cannot characterize how urban tree and treeless vegetation vary under prevalent vegetation growth. Considering that different vegetation types differ in ecological functioning, accurately identifying the spatiotemporal variability of the urban tree and nontree vegetation will potentially provide a first-order quantitative guide for urban development, renewal, and tailored adaptation planning against pressing social and environmental challenges.
As current urban-greening programs are often based on limited data, urban greening needs better data that are validated against comparative studies capturing spatial and temporal variability in and among cities30. Satellite-based approaches offer opportunities for mapping the urban greenspace coverage and characterizing the spatial and temporal dynamics of vegetation, which are especially valuable for a large-scale long-term analysis with limited ground-based observations31,32. Previous studies have demonstrated that reflectance-based vegetation greenness, such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI), can be an effective indicator of capturing the spatiotemporal variability of urban vegetation and evaluating the impacts of urbanization on vegetation growth12,33,34,35,36. While current assessments of urban vegetation are largely relied on a sole indicator of greenness, such as annual mean EVI and maximum EVI, which may introduce potential biases and limitations when vegetation activity was not thoroughly examined.
Given the above context, we undertook a large-scale comprehensive analysis of spatial patterns and multi-year variations in the urban tree and nontree vegetation during 2000-2020 in China using multi-source satellite-based observations. Specifically, we aim to: (1) investigate the spatiotemporal patterns of urban vegetation in terms of tree and nontree vegetation under rapid urban expansion; (2) examine the trends of the urban tree and nontree coverages across cities, urban core, and urbanization; (3) assess the impacts of changes in urban tree and nontree vegetation on vegetation greenness, growth, and productivity.
Results
Temporal changes in urban vegetation cover
From 2000 to 2020, the region-wide mean of the urban tree and nontree vegetation among the five sub-regions in China is presented in Fig. 1. During the past 20 years, the mean percent tree cover in the urban core, peri-urban core, and suburban was around 6%-8%, as compared with 8%-9% in the peri-suburban and 8%-10% in the rural area (Fig. 1a). We observed a notable decreasing trend in the urban tree cover during 2000-2011 and then a rapidly increasing trend over both the urban core and peri-urban core (Fig. 1a). By contrast, the region-wide averaged tree cover in the peri-suburban and rural area had an upward trend at the early 2000s prior to the following 5-year decline. Except for rural areas, there was a slightly increasing trend since 2011 over the urban core, peri-urban core, suburban, and peri-suburban (Fig. 1a). For the nontree vegetation, we saw a V-shape temporal series in the urban core, peri-urban core, and suburban with a rapid decline from 2000 to 2012, followed by a gradual recovery (Fig. 1b). The temporal variation of nontree vegetation was much mild in the peri-suburban and rural area than in the urban core (Fig. 1b).
Region-wide means of the annual (a) tree cover, (b) nontree vegetation, (c) urban green space (UGS), and (d) ratio of tree and nontree vegetation (RTN) within five major urban regions in China from 2000 to 2020. Piece-wise linear regression was used for fitting time series. Red dashed lines refer to a decreasing trend, and blue dashed lines refer to an increasing trend. k refers to the slope of segmented linear regression (positive in blue, and negative in red). The shaded area around the fitted line represents ±1 standard deviation. A two-tailed t test was used to examine the statistically significant level (p-value), ***p < 0.001, **p < 0.01, and *p < 0.05.
The region-wide mean time series of urban green space (UGS) was generally similar to the temporal pattern of nontree vegetation across the five sub-regions (Fig. 1c). In the urban core, UGS declined from nearly 48% in 2000 to 32% in 2011, followed by a 10-year growth to approximately 40% in 2020. Likewise, the magnitude of UGS variations decreased from the urban core to the rural areas, and UGS remained around 40–45% during the past 20 years (Fig. 1c). The ratio of tree and nontree vegetation (RTN) in the urban core and the peri-urban core slightly declined until 2010 (Fig. 1d) but increased in the peri-suburban and rural areas since 2000 due to the increase in tree cover and the reduction in nontree vegetation. Besides a fluctuating series during 2007–2015, an insignificant trend in RTN was observed in the suburban.
Spatial patterns of trends in urban tree and non-tree vegetation
Figure 2 shows the spatial distributions of the fraction of upward versus downward trends in urban tree cover and urban nontree vegetation over 577 selected cities. Overall, 274 (or 67.5%) of the 406 cities showed an increase in urban tree cover with more ascending trends of pixels relative to the descending trends of pixels (Fig. 2a). Approximately 11% of the cities with predominantly decreasing trends in the urban tree cover (fraction less than 50%) were primarily distributed in southern China, especially over the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Relative to the spatial pattern of urban tree cover, 41.3% of the cities exhibited a larger fraction (more than 100%) of downward trends in urban nontree vegetation, which were located in northern and northeast China (Fig. 2b, c).

The nationwide mean trends in the urban tree and nontree vegetation coverage were 0.073 ± 0.511% per year (mean ± 1 standard deviation) and −0.584 ± 1.022% per year, respectively. Region-wide means of the slopes of trends in tree cover, and nontree vegetation among the urban core, urbanization, and different climate zones are presented in Fig. 3. In the north temperate zone (IIC5), both TC and NTV had positive slopes over the urban core and the urbanization alike. Nontree vegetation with negative slopes was observed among the South temperate zone (III12), North subtropical zone (IVA2), Plateau climate zone (HD2), Middle latitude subtropical zone (VA2), and South subtropical zone (VIA2), of which those in the peri-urban core and the suburban had the greatest negative slopes (Fig. 3b).

The spatial patterns of the four categories in megacity and large-city with areas greater than 1000 km2 are displayed in Fig. 4d. Cities with a high percentage of double-ascending (AA) were mainly distributed in northern and northeast China, as compared to cities with less than 20% of AA located in southwest China. The double-descending (DD) trend showed an opposite spatial pattern in which cities with a high DD proportion were distributed in southwestern and the coast of southeastern China. A total of 35 among 39 mega- or large-cities exhibited less than 30% of DA, while China’s largest megapolitan area in the Yangtze Delta had 31.6% of DA. Cities with a proportion of AD greater than 30% accounted for almost half of the mega- or large-cities mainly from the Pearl River delta (49.4%) and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (40.6%) with a small proportion (15.5%) in the Yangtze Delta.
A spatially-explicit map of the four trend categories in urban tree/nontree vegetation at the city scale is shown in Fig. 5. We summarized the four major types of spatial patterns based on 39 major megapolitan regions and cities. The Pearl River delta megapolitan region was the representative of Type-1 mainly with increasing tree cover (AA and AD) over the urban core or the urbanization (Fig. 5a). Although the percentage of double-ascending (AA) declined from 46.6% in the urban core to 21.4% in the urbanization over the Pearl River delta, the dramatic AD increase compensated for the AA decrease, leading to the proportion of an ascending trend in tree cover greater than 70% in the urbanization. Likewise, the sum of AA and AD accounted for more than 90% of Beijing’s urban core and urbanization alike (Supplementary Figure 1).
Spatial distributions of four trend categories in urban tree/nontree vegetation over some major megapolitan regions and cities in China. A conceptual diagram of spatial patterns is shown at the top of each panel. The density of four categories along with the latitude and longitude of each city is included. TC: tree cover; NTV: nontree vegetation coverage. AA refers to double-ascending trends in both tree/nontree vegetation; DD refers to double-descending trends; AD refers to an ascending trend in tree cover accompanied by a descending trend in nontree vegetation; and vice versa for DA.
Most of the mega- and large-cities in China, such as the Yangtze Delta megapolitan region, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, and Changsha, belonged to Type-2, in which the urban core and urbanization were predominantly covered by AA and DD, respectively (Fig. 5b, Supplementary Fig. 1). Taking Chengdu as an example, the fraction of double-ascending (AA) declined from 77.4% in the urban core to 4.6% in the urbanization but the fraction of double-descending (DD) increased from 18.2% to 63.5% (Supplementary Figure 1). The Yangtze Delta megapolitan region with an urban area of 44243 km2 in 2020 (nearly 5-times larger than the urban area in 2000) was the fastest growing region in China during the past two decades and includes a variety of city types, such as megacity (Shanghai), large-city (Suzhou, Nanjing), and small city (Jiashan). In this region, the fraction of double-ascending (AA) declined from 43.4% in the urban core to 7.1% in the urbanization.
The other two types of spatial patterns were associated with only a small number among 39 mega- and large-cities in China. Figure 5c shows the map of Chaoshan’s megapolitan area located in eastern Guangdong province, where the fraction of downward trends in tree cover (DD and DA) exceeded 70% within the urban core or the urbanization. Shenyang, located in northeastern China, was the representative city of Type-4, where the urban core was predominantly covered by AA and AD and the urbanization with 69.8% of DA (Fig. 5d).
Relationship between urban vegetation cover and growth
To investigate the impact of the tree/nontree vegetation changes on urban vegetation greenness, growth, and productivity, we examined Pearson’s correlations between the slopes of trends in UGS, TC, and NTV and EVImin, EVIamp, EVImax, iEVI, and NPP across China’s urban areas (Fig. 6). Overall, we observed significant positive correlations between the UGS and the vegetation variables (p < 0.01, R ranging from 0.41 to 0.68, Fig. 6a). The correlation coefficients with the urban tree cover ranged from 0.51 to 0.67 (Fig. 6b). Nationwide, the trend of nontree vegetation was negatively correlated with EVImin, but positively associated with EVIamp, EVImax, iEVI, and NPP with R ranging from –0.32 to 0.48 (Fig. 6c). The slopes of the linear regression between the urban tree cover and the vegetation variables were generally greater than the slopes between the nontree vegetation and the variables.
Relationships of the trends between (a) urban green space (UGS), (b) urban tree cover (TC), (c) urban nontree vegetation (NTV), and vegetation greenness (EVImin, EVImax), growth (EVIamp), and productivity (iEVI, NPP) across China’s urban areas. The orange lines in (a), (b), and (c) refer to the best fitting straight lines of linear regression. d Pearson’s correlations of the trends in urban vegetation composition and vegetation greenness, growth, and productivity within seven climate zones. HD2: Plateau climate, IIC5: North temperate zone, IIID11: South temperate zone – inland, IIID12: South temperate zone, IVA2: North subtropical zone, VA2: Middle latitude subtropical zone, and VIA1: South subtropical zone. A two-tailed t test was used to examine the statistically significant level (p-value), and * refers to an insignificant correlation (p > 0.01). The exact sample size (n) for each group is given in parentheses.
We further examined the relationship between urban vegetation composition and greenness within seven climate zones (Fig. 6d). Similarly, there were strong correlations between UGS, TC, and vegetation variables with R ranging from 0.25 to 0.87 across most climate zones, except for the north temperate zone (IIC5). The negative correlation between NTV and EVImin was also found in Plateau climate zone, North temperate zone, South temperate zone-inland, Middle latitude subtropical zone, and South subtropical zone (HD2, IIC5, IIID11, VA2, and VIA1) with R ranging from -0.46 to 0.1. Apart from NTV exhibiting a comparable strength of relationship with vegetation variables in South temperate zone (IIID12) and North subtropical zone (IVA2), it invariably showed a weaker correlation as compared to the relationship between UGS, TC and vegetation variables. In addition, UGS was strongly correlated with vegetation greenness (EVImax) and vegetation activity (iEVI, EVIamp) across most regions except plateau climate (HD2).
Discussion
Major cities with areas larger than 1000 km2, accounting for nearly 60% of urban areas nationwide, exhibited a variety of spatial patterns of trends in the urban tree and nontree vegetation due to different stages of development (Fig. 5). The Beijing-Tianjin region and the Pearl River delta megapolitan area as one of the most developed regions in China showed predominantly ascending trends in the urban vegetation within- and peri-urban core. By contrast, the“second-tier cities such as Chengdu, Chongqing, and Wuhan with heterogeneous urban-rural spatial patterns of trends in the urban vegetation were an overwhelming majority and dominated the magnitude of urban expansion during the past two decades in China (Supplementary Figure 1). The significantly ascending trends in both the urban tree and nontree vegetation (category: AA) in the urban core mean that residents could enjoy more green space due to improving urban green15,38.
Nonetheless, we found these cities with rapid urbanization exhibited prevailingly double-descending trends in the urban vegetation (category: DD) across the peri-urban core, probably due to the substantial conversion from non-urban land cover to impervious surfaces. Thus, our findings highlight comprehensive schemes with reasonable and sustainable urban greenspace construction are needed to achieve a balance between greenspace supply and demand during the process of urbanization37,38,47.
Previous studies on urbanization impacts upon vegetation growth are usually based on a single indicator, such as the annual mean/maximum vegetation index, or leaf area index5,6,16,47,48. However, even if the fraction of vegetation coverage remains unchanged at a subpixel scale, the variation in the proportion of tree/nontree could lead to the alteration of vegetation greenness, growth, and productivity, as observed with satellite imagery (Fig. 6). Overall, UGS as the total of tree/nontree coverage could explain the most variability of vegetation variables across different climate zones, suggesting that both vegetation types should be considered for future studies of urban greening8,29. Particularly, we found the opposite relationships between the trends in EVImin and tree/nontree vegetation, which in turn could be beneficial for the accurate classification of urban vegetation.
Aside from the composition of tree/nontree cover, urban vegetation growth was also associated with climatic conditions, vegetation species, and human management5,29,49,50. Relationships among urban vegetation composition and vegetation variables varied across climate zones, in which there were stronger correlations over the subtropical regions (IVA2, VA2). Conversely, the weaker correspondence in IIC5 spanning from northern Xinjiang and the Loess Plateau to northeastern China was partially caused by the diverse vegetation types and the uneven development of cities within the sub-regions. An in-depth study could be further conducted to investigate the dominant factor controlling the urban vegetation growth at a city scale within each climate zone.
Exploring the spatiotemporal dynamics of the urban tree and nontree coverages is vital because it can provide insights into the environmental, social, economic, planning, and policy implications of urbanization, and can help inform decisions about urban greening and climate change mitigation and adaptation. Firstly, this study provides scientific evidence of the specific contribution of urban trees and nontree vegetation under the prevalent urban greening in China. We saw a superior growth of urban trees relative to nontree vegetation, especially over the Northeast and North China. There was a considerable enhancement in both urban tree and nontree coverage in the urban core of numerous mega- and large cities in China (such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Chengdu), illustrating that these economically-developed metropolises achieved a better outcome of urban greening.
Secondly, understanding the differences in the trends of urban tree and nontree coverages can help city planners and managers target their interventions more effectively. Given that tree and nontree vegetation differ in ecological functioning, this study helps identify areas where additional urban greening efforts may be needed. For example, Guangdong, which is the most populous province in China, suffers from intense urban heat islands51. Along with a decreasing trend in urban tree cover in the east of Guangdong (Fig. 5c), it is projected to be exposed to increasing heat-related risks under global warming. As the cooling effect induced by urban trees is significantly higher than that by treeless urban green spaces, our results highlight that more targeted and informed strategies for urban heat mitigation, such as tree planting, are needed in the specific metropolitan region.
Methods
Vegetation continuous fields
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Vegetation Continuous Fields (VCF) product (MOD44B, Version 6) provides a continuous quantitative portrayal of land surface cover at the 250-meter spatial resolution and is a global representation of surface vegetation cover. This yearly dataset depicts a sub-pixel fraction of three ground cover components, i.e., percent tree cover (TC), percent nontree vegetation (NTV), and percent non-vegetated area, using daily surface reflectance and land surface temperature data from the MODIS instrument aboard NASA’s Terra satellite based on a fully-automated machine learning algorithm55. The tree cover layers contain estimates of the percentage of horizontal ground in each pixel covered by woody vegetation greater than 5 meters in height55,56. 21-year records (2000-2020) of VCF were obtained and processed on Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform. The start date of the annual period for this product begins with the day of year 65. The quality and cloud layers were used to select the pixels with at least 2 (of 8) clear periods (bit field value equals 0) throughout the year.
Vegetation growth variables
EVI as an optimized version of vegetation index effectively reducing soil background influences has been widely used as a proxy of canopy greenness57. The equation of EVI is
where ρblue, ρred, and ρNIR are the reflectance in the blue, red, and near-infrared bands, respectively. For a thorough depiction of vegetation activity, we selected several vegetation metrics based on the MODIS land cover dynamics product (MCD12Q2, Version 6). This dataset at yearly intervals combined from Terra and Aqua provides a global estimate of phenological metrics retrieved from the seasonal time series of MODIS-derived 2-band Enhanced Vegetation Index. We used 19-year (2001–2019) records of EVI_Minimum (EVImin), EVI_Amplitude (EVIamp), and EVI_Area (iEVI, the sum of daily interpolated EVI from green-up to dormancy). Annual integrated EVI (iEVI) has been widely used as a remote sensing measure of the annual vegetation productivity. Besides, annual EVI_Maximum (EVImax) was computed based on the sum of EVI_Minimum and EVI_Amplitude at the pixel level. The pixels with cloud contamination or poor quality were removed on the basis of the quality assessment layer. Given the mismatch in temporal coverages, we alternatively examined the variations of VCF during 2001–2019 when inter-comparing with greenness-based vegetation indices.
The MOD17A3H Version 6 product, which provides information about annual Net Primary Production (NPP), was also used in this study for representing vegetation productivity. The annual NPP with 500 m pixel resolution was based on a light-use-efficiency model. All variables with reference to the vegetation greenness, growth, and productivity were downscaled to a 250-m grid, consistent with the spatial resolution of the MODIS VCF product.
Urbanization dataset
The dataset of the morphological evolution of China’s cities from 2000 to 2020 was used to delineate the urban boundary and urban expansion52. Relative to an administrative boundary, this product provides a natural boundary for each city based on harmonized nighttime satellite data, representing the urban extent of a nature city. It is a valuable reference to long-term variations of the global core cities and is critical for formulating effective policies to achieve urban sustainability52. To ensure a sufficient number of available remote sensing pixels, we selected the growing cities during the past two decades with areas larger than 100 km2 6, based on the urban boundary in 2020. Therefore, there are 577 megapolitan cities in China for further analysis. To differentiate the effect of urbanization levels, the urban regions in this study were divided into five types of urbanization, inducing the urban core (the extent of urban boundary in 2000, urbanization phase-0), peri-urban core (2000–2005, urbanization phase-I), suburban (2005-2010, urbanization phase-II), peri-suburban (2010-2015, urbanization phase-III), and rural (2015–2020, urbanization phase-IV), respectively.
.usgs.gov/products/mcd12q1v006/ ).
Pixels with a significant tendency (p < 0.05) in both urban tree cover and nontree vegetation were divided into four groups: AA refers to double-ascending trends in both tree/nontree vegetation; DD refers to double-descending trends; AD refers to an ascending trend in tree cover accompanied by a descending trend in nontree vegetation, and vice versa for DA. Spatial patterns of the four categories of urban vegetation trends were examined and inter- and intra- compared between urban core and urbanization among megacities and large cities (with areas greater than 1000 km2). To assess how the change in vegetation composition affects the vegetation greenness, growth, and productivity, we examined the correlation of coefficients (R) between the slopes of the trends among tree cover, nontree vegetation, and a series of vegetation indicators (EVImin, EVImax, EVIave, EVIamp, iEVI, and NPP). A t-test was used to examine the statistically significant level of the relationships (p-value). Further, Pearson’s correlations among these variables were also computed within the six climatic zones.
In this study, all satellite-based data (MOD44B, MOD13Q1, MCD12Q1, MCD12Q2, and MOD17A3H) acquisition, processing, analysis, and visualization were conducted in Google Earth Engine (https://explorer.earthengine.google.com).
